As 12 imagens da XXIX Bienal de São Paulo 2010

“Penitentes”, “Alimentadores” ou “Irmãos das Almas” são confrarias laicas de caráter secreto que rezam noite adentro pelos “espíritos sofredores”. Cobertos com mantos ou lençóis, de preceitos rígidos, místicos, certas ordens chegam a praticar a autoflagelação. A série exposta na Bienal faz parte do projeto inédito “Penitentes: dos Ritos de Sangue à Fascinação do Fim do Mundo”, iniciado em 2002, feita com equipamento analógico, curado por Rosely Nakagawa, onde até abril de 2011 foram fotografadas 221 confrarias nas cinco regiões do país.

“Penitents”, “Feeders” or “Brothers of Souls” are groups of secret brotherhoods that pray all night long for  the  “suffering spirits”. Covered with blankets or sheets, of rigid manners, mystics, some of them  practice self-flagellation. The series exposed at the Biennale is part of the original project: “Penitents: rites of blood to the fascination of the world’s end”. Initiated in 2002, shots were made ​​with analog equipment, curated by Rosely Nakagawa where until 2010 they were photographed 118 confraternities in the five regions of Brazil.
